THURSDAY SEPT 15, 2005 - DAY 2

Keynote Speaker: Rev Run of Run DMC fame, introduced by VJ extraordinaire Matt Pinfield

Pinfield read from his notes while introducing the Rev, then got a cellphone call in the middle of it. kinda funny, kinda lame. Their interview focused on Run DMC's beginnings, their rise to fame, and even talked about Jam Master Jay's death. Very heartfelt to hear Run tell the audience that he was so close with Jay, he always told him he loved him and appreciated him, hence, he did not miss him as much as you'd think, as most people rue the fact that they didn't get to say the things they wanted to before untimely deaths. The Rev was in church when he heard about it, what a surprise. His reaction was more along the lines of Jay's life being full and fulfilled, and what was there to do in HIS life, to make living worthwhile. that's what i got out of it, very positive.

why Pinfield is sticking out his tongue at the Rev is beyond me

guess Run had enough of Pinfield's tongue, so he gave him the finger...

Today I saw two of my favorite cd's being performed by two of my favorite new acts, Tim Fite and Goblin Cock. The beauty of the CMJ Music Marathon is catching such talent in one day, 10 hours apart. Let's start with the day, shall we?

Before I talk about my Tim Fite CMJ Music Marathon experiential, I gotta tell ya what a great record his "Gone Ain't Gone" is. Mr. Fite is an original thinker, singer, artist, producer and performer, and all aspects of Tim's personality come through on his Anti- Records debut. See below for the full-on website scoops for samples and such.

I personally find Tim's artwork intristing enuff for bastardization:

Here is the meaning of Tim's cover artwork (his own)

The meaning behind the torn off finger.

The torn off finger is just one more example of gone not being gone. I seem to always be losing fingers, temporaritly preventing me from doing the things I need all my fingers to do. When this happens, I often become dissoriented and dispondent. I start thinking nilistically. Oh woe is me; first my fingers next my arm. Then all my blood; then good-bye. This is not so, however; I just have to send away for more fingers. They come in the mail, in a purplish envelope, and they work just as well as the ones I have lost. So when ever I am missing fingers, I think, "It's not the end of the world, gone ain't gone." Then I wait for my envelope of new fingers feeling pretty good about things.
Jangalang,
Tim

Tim Fite took the Daystage at Lincoln Center at 2:30PM on Thursday, for some reason, Lincoln Center production peeps would not allow his screen onstage with him, upon which he beams images integral to his performance; artwork, pictures and other video bringing extra meaning to his visually-inviting songs. To overcome this, Tim had the audience come up close to see the drawn pictures in his tiny books, that illustrated the songs

Tim started off singing a bit with acoustic, in front of his wooden boombox

Accompanied by his "brother" on laptop and background vocals, Tim preached the willowy wisdom of "Gone Ain't Gone"

Tim gets down evangelist-like, spouts truths, semi-truths, and made-up truths, all part of the grand scheme of the Tim Fite experience. Before his show was over, Tim was running around Lincoln Center's lobby, hugging people, and generally making everyone feel good and happy. What a guy!

Tim points to his personal drawings from his picture book. The audience had to get close to see the drawings, which were funny and whimsical, like Tim

Not only does Tim Fite gesticulate, rap, sing, contort his body, and dance around, he is a story-teller accompanying his songs with his bodily movements, wry smile and imaginative sense of humor. The man is, I repeat, a genius

Later in the eve, I headed over to Bowery Ballroom to see the full-on Tim Fite performance with video screenage, but the show started early, and the Bowery Ballroom didn't tell anybody, except Tim Fite. No one at CMJ knew, no one at Epitaph knew. Hence, the 6:30 show started at 6:00, and I missed Tim Fite!! Not right! Good move, ya Bowery Bums!

Checked out the Powerhouse Gallery downtown, where photographer Janette Beckman was being feted for her book MADE IN THE UK, The Music Of Attitude 1977-1983, featuring excellent photos Janette took as offical photog for UK rag New Musical Express (or was that Melody maker) of punk and ska kids and bands on the verge of stardom during that tumultuous musical era: Sex Pistols, The Clash, The (English) Beat, Paul Weller, Ramones etc

All photos by Janette Beckman.

Headed over to Don Hill's, where Munsey from Skateboard Marketing was having his annual metal fest/feast, with performance by FEAR FACTORY, free beer and a couple of humongous heros, I'm talking 6-7 feet long each. Scrumptuous. I had never seen the Fear Factor before, they were metallic excellence, devoid of superstar attitude, just rockin the college kids and metalloid crowd. Munsey also invites the TJ Martell foundation for Cander and Aids Research to throw a raffle, with electric guitars, FF-signed skateboards and Vince-Neil signed t-shirts up for grabs. That Munsey, what a guy. Key link: Skateboard Mktg

Head bangers R Us

Cruised over to Ace of Clubs to catch the Dangerbird Recs/Cast Mgmt showcase, esp Silversun Pickups. However, showtimes were a tad screwed, and the SS would not on till at least an hour later. I did catch the last 5 minutes of Sabrosa Purr, who, as I walked in, went from jangly indie rock to an incredibly soft murmur, a purr, mind you, in a split second, so my voice boomed in the silence asking the mersh guy "WHO'S THIS BAND". Next up was La Rocca, who reminded me of Bruce Springsteen meets U2 in a Dublin pub. Also met cool folks Matt Solodky and Jeff from Cast/Dangerbird. Good folks, good label!

La Rocca, La Rolla, take me back to Ireland, willya? A good songwriter, mate! Soulful, radio-friendly tunes to croon

Key linkage: Dangerbird

Taxied over to The Knitting Factory Old Space, where the very cool Unschooled Records showcase was a-happening. Watched the very lonely Decomposure sing along to his laptop beats, looking very white and Canadian and a tad uncomfortable, but the lad pulled it off. His new cd features his likeable vocals mixed in with his scratchy soundscapes, well worth a listen or 3.

Jefe did a bit of animation with the first Decomposure cd logo, which featured a sweet (Canadian?) leaf:

As I contemplated leaving the Knitting Factory to head even further downtown to 169 Bar (The Heavenly States and Ebb & Flow), I ended up catching the beginning of PLAT, the Unschooled Icelandic duo. All thoughts of leaving left my mind, as PLAT were unbelievably cool, making sounds with a plethora of electronics, feedback from a speaker, keyboards awash in phase and magnificence. The duo's sexy Icelandia girlfriends were there as well, enjoying the show and filling me in on their exploits in the land of Ice and hot springs.

first, ve make ze zounds organic und plat-like

ze speaker und ze feedback, sving it zis vay and zat. voopee!!

The Plat sound created an aural collage, so I set my camera on artsy fartsy and got some nice colors. looksie how ze main guy disappears in ze ether

more colors from ze colorful aural landscapes of Platski. The Iceland girl was telling me how this band fills up the clubs with dancing people. I believe it. I would like to dance with her. horizontally.

ze duo melt into one... much like ze polar icecaps melt into ze sea. zis global varming ees a bummer man!

MIDNIGHT! TIME FOR GOBLIN COCK!

Goblin Cock. The name says it all. Funny, gothic, rockin. Pinback leader Rob Crowe's stoner death metal side project is so much more than that! Goblin Cock's debut cd "Bagged and Boarded" on Absolutely Kosher Records is an amazingly great cd, filled with killer riffs, headbanging beats, yet melodic and memorable at the same time.

This is one of those records you listen to over and over, and you just GOT TO see it live! Well, CMJ Music Marathon provided the opportunity for Corey and his Absolutely Kosher crew to highlight the Cock in their showcase at The Mercury Lounge.

Goblin Cock is:
Lord Phallus - guitar and voice
Bane Ass-Pounder - guitar
King Sith - bass
Braindeath - drums
Loki Sinjuggler - keyboards

The band came out dressed in these traditional robes, with cowls that covered their faces entirely... spooky!

note the double devil downward horns

here's an arty cock shot

here's an animation to get the feel of the cockgoblin

yet another animated cocksterpiece

now, check out this satanic goblinesque cockrock; the back of the cd, cool huh?...
