I am a Knicks fan and a Phil Jackson fan, and I am more excited about this Knicks team now, than I have been since PMFJ took over as prez.
perhaps Me-lo’s latest contract was “forced on” Phil by (ex?) alcoholic a$$hole Jimbo Dolan, and PJ tried his best to accommodate Me-lo with a win-now team. He made bets on 8==D Rose and Joking Noah being healthy all year, with Noah being the defensive cornerstone. He lost the bet. You have to gamble sometimes, especially when your aging superstar needs help. Not any more…
Behind the scenes, and in front of your eyes, Phil Jackson the Zen Master has been rebuilding all along, with a cornerstone of players Phil believes in: Ron Baker, Chasson Randall, Lance Thomas, Courtney Lee, Willy Hernangomez, Mind Kuzmingus, Kristaps Porzingis, Kyle OQuinn, Justin Holiday, Marsh Plumlee, and Mo N’Dour. This is the team Phil has built around his first great draft pick.
Phil said in his season-ending press conference how the team played better the last few games, against formidable opponents in the playoff hunt, a Knicks team who played the right way. It’s with these core players, barring trades, with whom Phil will move forward with the concept of team and team defense, first and foremost.
These players don’t bitch about the triangle, they recognize it as an opportunity to score, to set up better shots, to have ball movement and player movement. It’s not rocket science, Phil says, it’s the basketball intelligence to be open to “plays”.
“According to sources, Knicks are unhappy with the triangle?” the only Knicks grumbling about the triangle are the ones with no concept of a higher bball intelligence, the confused ones: Me-lo, Rose, Jennings. CLee grumbled a bit, but he said it publicly to the press and he’s a smart player who gets it. whereas Rose grumbled publicly and basically DOES NOT GET IT. surprise!
Also grumbling all negative about the triangle and being anti-Phil are insipid bloggers and journalists who write anything to get clicks, as well as a slew of Knicks fans who believe the anti-Phil, anti-triangle hype, the KP is unhappy and confused hype, the bandwagon Me-lo and 8==DRose fans, dissing the triangle because “the players” don’t get it, and believe all the media hype that the Knicks, as a whole, are unhappy with “The Triangle”.
It is time… for Me-lo… to leave the Knicks and New York City, for greener pastures. Win now, Orangeman! and don’t let the door hit you in the NTC on the way out!
Here we are, Knicks fans, with a top 10, maybe top 7 or better, draft pick, in a great PG heavy draft, with 2 second round picks to boot! NOW, substitute another free agent superstar to take Me-lo’s place, who understands how to play team basketball and can help KP grow into a monster, under the tutelage of the smartest mentor in NBA history.
Lastly, Derrick Rose. 8==D Rose. 8=======D Rose. Maybe Phil will sign Rose to be a scoring guard? no doubt one of the league’s best penetrators, on and off the court. Max deal? Meniscus says no way! Let 8===D Rose go and you’ve got more bucks to go after a veteran or superstar PG: JrueHoliday, JeffTeague, GeorgeHill, KyleLowry, CP3. Any of these players would automatically raise the overall intelligence of this NY team. Can Phil replace Me-lo with another Superstar AND a Point Guard? THAT is the question.
Personally, I’d like to see Chasson (The Dream) Randle have a shot at PG
The Knicks will have a formidable team next season, and I’m excited to see the next chapter of the Knicks designed by PMFJ, with a top 10 draft pick, and 2 new superstars to help guide this solid, intelligent core of young Knickerbockers to greater heights.
I love that PJ and the Knicks acquired Derrick Rose and Joking Noah (yes?) and are looking at SG Eric Gordon to fill out starting 5, but he’s yet another injury-prone glassy player ala Rose.
and yet, a healthy DRose + healthy JNoah AND healthy EGordon? add in Olympic Melo and Legendary Latvian Hero known as Purezingis? is this not the Stuff of Dreams? One of the best starting 5’s in the league?
Questions all Knicks fans are asking and arguing about: Are they healthy, and can they stay healthy? when you have players coming off major injuries and surgeries that have kept them out a large percentage of past seasons, it seems Phil Jackson is rolling the dice that all with stay healthy enough to contribute to a full season.
Other than Rose/Noah’s Bulls connection, Rose + Gordon have history too.
Gordon is pure shooter, a smart offensive threat, a catch and shoot first,
pick n roll n pass n drive second. Having a backcourt with 2 guys who know each other’s game from way back is a plus. With PJ’s triangle offense helping find the open man, Gordon is a winning pickup. if it happens, just sayin…
Knicks fans were desperate for another max player to fill C or SG position… Durant, Horford, DeRozan, Whiteside… as we now know, it ain’t happening… this year. Captain Phil and General Mills could not blow Dolan’s wad on 1 max player this year, and then only have a few million to sign another half dozen players. Phil n Mills have to crunch the numbers! Crunch!
Next year’s a different story, mo’ money, expanded salary cap. but this year? gonna be same as last, spreading out the money to get quality, hi IQ ballers who fit the team mold.
Walt Clyde Frazier, one of the greatest players in NBA history and (in)disputably greatest Knick of all time, spends much of HIS time at MSG, broadcasting games via his inimitable stylized commentary and BBall knowledge.
Can he be persuaded to impart his knowledge of the game to the raw energy and athleticism of NYK point guards of the future, Tony Wroten and Jerian Grant, have them tone down their game and tone up their bball IQ?
Clyde was teammates with current Knicks prez Phil Jackson in their respective rookie seasons; roomed, traveled, played and won 2 championships together with their beloved Knicks.
Both men are winners and Zen Masters in their chosen professions; Clyde as player, broadcaster, writer, speaker, commercial endorser; Phil as player, coach, writer and president, the latter yet to be fully realized with a chip.
Will Phil acknowledge the knowledge of old friend Clyde, who has watched and commentated brilliantly with MSG since 1998? Clyde’s commentary is laced with opinions and knowledge of the game (“see the ball, see your man!“) and of the current crop of players whom Phil has assembled.
I would like to see Phil assemble the old time Knicks, many of whom come to games and sit with Phil (Bill Bradley) or work with MSG (Earl Monroe, Bernard King et al), to be coaching mentors to the current squad. If Phil wants to be a winner, why not have the greatest veterans who ever played the game, FOR the Knicks, AT the Garden of Dreams, BE mentors and commentators with the team, at workouts, at games.
Allan Houston is working with Tony Wroten? EXCELLENT! let’s move forward in that direction and have sessions both on and off the court, on how to be the best they can be, and have a winning mentality.
I look forward to seeing new coach Hornacek, with his impeccable basketball career and tremendous bball acumen, talking to Clyde about the Suns’ offensive attack, and how it relates to current core of Knicks, including Melo, Porzingis, Lopez and #NYKPG Wroten & Grant.
“I am extremely excited and honored to be the next coach of such an historic franchise,” said Hornacek. “I look forward to working with Phil – a coach and teacher of the game I have admired for many years – and collaborating with him and our staff to take this team to the level that Knicks fans expect.”
Let’s hope Coach Hornacek and President Jackson collaborate with the basketball minds of the greatest Knicks of all time. I’m sure they would all appreciate the opportunity, as would Knicks fan appreciate the thought.
